Kim Smith is a lifelong technologist with over 35 years of experience in computing, cybersecurity, and custom software development. His journey into electronics began in the 8th grade, when he salvaged a full DeVry electronics course from a dumpster and taught himself everything he could — from vacuum tubes to transistors. That curiosity became a career.

After studying electronics at Huey P. Long Vo-Tech and diving into microprocessor programming, Kim’s technical skills began blending with leadership. While managing multiple Texaco stations across the Northwest, he was trusted with hundreds of thousands in daily revenue. Texaco soon recognized his computer expertise and brought him into early deployments of information systems, where he helped maintain hardware and software across the region.

His career grew from building bulletin board systems in the early days of the Commodore 64 to writing C++ tools for Medicaid billing in Louisiana. Kim has created systems for universities, nonprofits, suicide prevention hotlines, and public health initiatives — always with an emphasis on making complex technology approachable and life-saving data accessible. His work has helped organizations like ULM, Tensas Parish, and the YWCA of Northeast Louisiana streamline operations and support vulnerable communities.

Today, Kim leads ActiveTechMonroe, a technology services provider known for its integrity, quiet reliability, and deep industry knowledge. He is the creator of FIRST — a Medicaid billing automation system that has recovered millions in missed revenue for home healthcare agencies. His software for Red River Presort, Simmons Sporting Goods, and others has eliminated repetitive tasks, reduced human error, and saved countless hours.

Kim holds the ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity credential and is actively pursuing the SSCP certification. While he describes himself as an introvert who “never feels like he knows enough,” his clients trust him to recover critical data, build secure systems, and solve problems no one else can. At 62, he continues to evolve — with a goal of growing FIRST and building a team that shares his values: calm under pressure, commitment to truth, and technology that works when it matters most.
